From Adazi-Nnukwu town. Belonging to the ‘Mmanwu Melu Asaa’ category: sophisticated masquerades that perform as a group, owned and operated by a known age grade. The Ogwulugwu is a family of masquerade renowned for its gracefully eclectic dances, is a star performer at social events like second burial rites, annual festivities, title taking ceremonies, masquerade festivals, etc. This very beautiful & colorful masquerade family originally comprised of 8 masquerades namely Otigbuanyinya (Father), Nnenwanya (Mother), Chinelo, Oliaku, Ezeadi, Oviru (daughters) and two Police men (Security).
The Ogwulugwu is a highly respected and honourable masquerade. To be part of the ‘Asaa’ classification, an aspiring masquerade group is made to invite the entire existing members of this prestigeuos cadre of dancing masquerades and the Nze-Na-Ozo (titled men) of the Ezeani class to the ‘Omo-Afo’ (town social square) on its maiden outing demonstration day or at their convenience on an ‘Afo’ Market day. Everyone invited is entertained to dance routines, music and treated to sufficient food and drinks. Four Kolanuts, one Cock and one Yam are presented to each titled man in attendance and upon their acceptance, the masquerade group automatically becomes categorized within the ‘Asaa’ class of masquerades. This process can be repeated, making the group to join even a higher cadre known as ‘Asaa na abo’. This class of masquerade generally entertain or maintain peace and order in the community.
Now aged, mostly 3 daughters and both parents show up at annual masquerade festival held in the town.
